Abu Simbel on Lake Nasser
These photographs capture the main frontage of the Great
Temple and the huge seated statues of Ramses 11 at Abu Simbel built by the
greatest of all the Pharaoh's of ancient Egypt around 1300BC. The River Nile
once flowed close to the base of the temple but with the flooding caused by the
creation of the High Dam at Aswan and Lake Nasser, it was physically relocated
in large cut sections into an artificial hill shown in the aerial photograph
that begins this selection.
Larger versions of these photographs on my own library
Crooktree.com or on
Alamy. com and are available for purchase.
For most visits on Nile cruises the temple is reached by a short flight from
Aswan but a Lake Nasser cruise allows much more time to visit the site as well
as enjoy the spectacular Light and Sound Show. Best light for photographing the
site is in the morning and for cruise visitors a useful gap between departing
and arriving flight visitors is around 10.30am.
