AURORA BOREALIS

    The Aurora Book.......
"this is a book which combines scientific information with unforgettable beauty" quote by Professor John Brown, 10th Astronomer Royal for Scotland

I began photographing the Aurora Borealis in the North East of Scotland in September 1989. Since then I have photographed probably over 350 Northern Light displays up to March 2016, giving a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the phenomena. It is probably the largest library of Scottish Aurora photographs in existence.

Selections of my photos of the Aurora are available to buy through Crooktree.com, Picfair and Collections. There is also an article about observing and photographing Aurora in Britain on the Links page in Crooktree.com.

For those wishing to get notice of Aurora displays, especially in the UK I suggest making the following sites favourites:
Spaceweather.com and AuroraWatchUK and a recently established one worth a look Auroraspy.co.uk

In 1996, I and a friend and colleague, John MacNicol published a book through Crooktree Images entitled ‘The Aurora—An Introduction for Photographers and Observers’. It is only the second dedicated book on the subject published in the UK.
The book is now out-of-print although a few from a previously remaindered stock or second hand copies can be found on the Internet e.g. Amazon.

The above and below are examples of various Aurora structures and colours photographed since Dec 1989 and up to Nov 2003.
The bulk of my early Aurora Collection was on Fuji Provia 400ASA pushed to 1600 35mm chrome stock and amounts to several thousand images. Since 2003/4 my images are now mainly digital using a Fuji S2/S3/S5 and Nikon D700 DSLR and I am very pleased with the quality of the results, especially the D700 even at 3200/6400ISO.

Prints of selected Aurora can be obtained from Galleryprintsuk.net as prints or canvases.
